A.K. was named after his Iranian great-grandfather, Abduhl Karim. His father's family fled Iran during the sociopolitical unrest of the Shah's reign in the 1970s. His mother was born in California and is of Mexican-American descent. He was nicknamed A.K. early on and as a young child lived on a farm in the fertile Central Coast region of California. Working in the fields of the Santa Maria Valley alongside his family engrained a strong work ethic in A.K., which he later drew upon for his studies, sports, and work.
A.K. has loved sports since he signed up for his first T-ball team at age five. Baseball was quickly followed by basketball a few years later, but, by age 15, it was water polo that intrigued him. A.K. was the third athlete in the history of his high school to be honored with the Aquatics Man of the Year Award two years in a row. Following high school, A.K. attended a community college in neighboring San Luis Obispo before finishing his education at Cal Poly State University. Initially unsure of what career path to follow, A.K. decided to study mechanical engineering, perhaps for the sheer challenge. Two years later, in the midst of the Enron and WorldCom debacle, as well as the Tech Bubble, A.K. discovered a great interest in finance and accounting and their immense impact on the business world.
During his last two years at the university, A.K. helped his family by running both a mid-sized independent grocery store and assisting in running a very successful produce brokerage business. It was then that he realized his passion for closely held businesses. A.K. quickly immersed himself in city life once he moved to Atlanta, Georgia.He credits his liking of Georgia more than California to the “genuine good nature” of the southern people.Joining Spring Street Financial has allowed A.K. to enjoy a career which is both challenging and rewarding, while positively impacting the lives of hard working individuals, families and small businesses. A.K. has demonstrated his passion and competence in the field by passing the CFP® Board Exam soon after joining the firm. When not helping clients, A.K. keeps active in water polo, cycling, running and yoga, and he completed an Ironman Triathlon in November 2008. In addition to physical fitness, he cultivates his artistic side by playing acoustic guitar and enjoying a wide variety of local live music.
